About
Elaine Wint has an outstanding record as a broadcaster and mass communications specialist, presenting and producing several highly acclaimed programmes for national television and radio in Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia and Miami.
Elaine’s entrance into media in 1969 as a schoolgirl participant in the television series “Through Tomorrow’s Eyes” laid the foundation for a lifetime practice in radio and television.
She began her stint with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation as Production Assistant for Television following on her graduation from St. Andrew High School for Girls as Head Girl in 1970,
Her introduction to the national media audience in Jamaica as a Television Presenter occurred in 1972. The television programme “Where It’s At”, is today still named as a pioneering product while premiering Jamaica’s first female presenter with an afro.
1970's
In 1975, Elaine made the transition to radio broadcasting assuming the role as Producer/Presenter for the daily featured programme “Taking Care of Business”. The three and a half hour show aired on JBC Radio with its impact on social behavior being noted by social workers at the University of the West Indies.
TCB was also recognized as the first programme on Jamaican Radio to boast a daily playlist of over 90% Jamaican music; contributing significantly to the acceptance and promotion of Jamaican music.
Between 1976 and 1979, Elaine rose to the position of Chief Producer/Presenter Radio. Television, however, was a strong call and Elaine returned to the medium as a Presenter for Prime Time News and the current affairs discussion programme “Round Table Talk”.
By 1981, she had been accorded the title of Specialist Television Presenter, broadcasting at national and state events and interviewing world leaders and international performers.
1980's
Partnering with her husband, Elaine operated as a Director for Colann Limited between 1984 and 1992 providing financial and business administration services for Chris Blackwell’s Island Records and Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong.
The company also provided project and artiste management services for several well-known local and international musicians, recording artistes and performing groups.
1990's
Between May 1988 and July 1993, concerned with the growing rate of teenage pregnancies and drug usage and addiction among Jamaican youth, Elaine developed and presented the “Breakthrough” radio workshops and self-esteem and leadership development seminars for youth.
Several of the “Breakthrough Crew” members are leaders today in the fields of broadcasting, law, academia and public administration.
In September 1992, Elaine resumed her prime-time television relationship with the Jamaican public as Presenter for “Tuesday Forum”.
The weekly live talk show presented leaders and practitioners in all sectors of Jamaican life and established the format for live community television. The popular series continued for almost ten years earning her the title “Jamaica’s Oprah”.
Now
Elaine has participated as a lecturer for the Adolescent Fertility Management Unit of the University Hospital and a resource person for the Women in Development Studies programme of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.
Her awards include the Caribbean Echo President’s Award for Outstanding Media Services, The Kiwanis Club Distinguished Service Award and the United Nation’s Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Services to the International Year of Peace, THE Reggae Gold Award for services to the Jamaican Music Industry. She is the proud mother of two daughters and a son.
